Wow, I had dream that I hadn't updated The Great Travel Bug Knockout blog for three months and then I woke up and IT WAS TRUE!

Anyway, I'm back now, so with only 6 weeks to go, it time to say goodbye to Hazards of Geocaching 1 - Karon's Knockout Racer, Smart Car 10 Knockout Racer and Knockout Ferrari, and in true Bullseye fashion, let's have a look at what they could've won;

Not quite as exciting as a speedboat, but easier to find space on your mantlepiece for!

Only 3 survivors now;
the noble traveller, in the hands of German cacher muskosa,
Love and Peace (Maan), in the hands of Canadian cachers StoGirls and possibly on it's way from Quebec to Florida,
and runaway leader BraveHeart, currently in this German cache, and, thanks to a lengthy sojourn in The Antipodes followed by a recent return trip to Europe has racked up an impressive 24315.11 official Knockout miles! I can imagine Team Blid435 rubbing their hands together in anticipation!

Meanwhile, the top 2 entries in The Great Travel Bug Knockout continue to make moves (albeit tiny ones), as Australia cacher Fullboar2010 has added 1.82 miles to Team Blid435's BraveHeart TB by placing it into this cache, and Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan) Travel Bug has been retrieved from the cache that it was resting in by Canadian cacher woodleg.as.

Still no sign of any movement for mat smith's Hazards of Geocaching 2 (The Sheep) Travel Bug, but good news for both of the leading contenders in The Great Travel Bug Knockout;

Team Blid435's  BraveHeart continues it's Antipodean adventure, having been retrieved by local Queensland cacher Fullboar2010 from the TB Motel that was checked into, although Love and Peace (Maan) (owned by Hediya) may have caught a crab in Canada, after cacher geric1 dropped it into this puzzle cache, 61.06 miles from where he picked it up 3 days ago.

Is geocaching about to become less hazardous?

With four days until the next elimination, things are not looking good for mat smith's Hazards of Geocaching 2 (The Sheep) John's Knockout Racer Travel Bug, which is currently almost 200 miles behind it's nearest competitor and is in the hands of an occassional cacher who hasn't cached since picking up the woolly TB.

In fact, the only entry in The Great Travel Bug Knockout which has moved this week is Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan) TB, which Quebecois cacher new8812 placed into this new cache (after visiting 12 more in the area!), where it was quickly retrieved by fellow Canadian Musicien. He, in turn placed it into another newly-placed cache, adding 1.31 miles to LaP(Maan)'s total milage covered, from where it was picked-up a couple of days later by geric1 who still has possession of the trackable.

the noble traveller cleans up

German cacher Flixsi retrieved cooper troopers' the noble traveller Travel Bug from the Whovian multicache that it was residing in. A few days later it was grabbed by fellow German Orphik at this CITO Event 156.62 miles away. Interestingly, Flixsi has not logged an attended at this event, but did attend an earlier event, but Orphik didn't. This means that the noble traveller possibly spent time in the hands of another cacher in between. If the missing link (not that one!) is found, then I'll add any extra distance covered.

Also on the move has been Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan) TB, which has been picked up by Canadian cacher new8812, who has dipped LaP(Maan) into this cache, adding 24.03 miles to it's total distance covered, before going on to dip the Love-spreading trackable into 1, 2, 3, 4 further caches. No milage was added to Love and Peace's official total due to the rule stating that only the first cache visited by each cacher holding the TB counts. New8812 have retained possession.

Finally, mat smith's Hazards of Geocaching 2 (The Sheep) Travel Bug has been retrieved from the Dutch multicache that it was grazing in by occassional cacher Drifter_NL.

Leaders check into Motels, 3rd place checks out?

Just as it looked like nothing would be happening this month, all of the top 3 entries in The Great Travel Bug Knockout make moves;

Current leader Team Blid435's BraveHeart TB has been dropped into this Australian TB Motel, near to Cairns in Queensland, adding a respectable 2331.61 miles to it's distance travelled. Hopefully the shiny little trackable will be safe there, as a couple of recent finders have reported syringes and drug parafernalia in the immediate area.

Not to be left behind, Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan) Travel Bug has taken up residence in this recently-placed TB Motel east of Montreal in the Canadian province of Quebec, adding 2309.72 miles to it's total milage.

Meanwhile, cacher Jacaru has passed ownership of his 3rd-placed entry, Knockout Ferrari, on to newbie cacher j33pster, who has marked KF as missing. I've attempted to contact Californian cachers VWjunkies who were holding the little spotscar, but they haven't replied and are apparently no longer actively caching. This doesn't neccessarily mean that Knockout Ferrari is out of the competition, as TBs do seem to have the abilty to turn up anywhere at any time!

I'm off for an internet-free week in Cornwall, so probably there'll be lots of movements in the next 7 days! I'll catch up next week and, hopefully, finally get those pictures of the winner's trophy posted.

It's a bit of a ding-dong

As the bell is about to ring time on oceanblue07970's Half Hearted Travel Bug, a cowbell is ringing in panic as smart451's Smart Car 10 Knockout Racer TB retakes 5th place overall in The Great Travel Bug Knockout from lgxkls' Hazards of Geocaching 1 trackable. SC10KR is now 50 miles ahead of HoG1 after German cacher Der-Steiger placed the tiny 2-seater into this rural German traditional, adding a respectable 87.77 miles to it's distance travelled.

Relief for mat smith, owner of HoG1's cross-species sibling Hazards of Geocaching 2 (The Sheep) which has been retrieved from the Dutch cache that it was penned in, before the bicycle ferry was moored up for the winter, by local Dutch cacher citylady.

Finally, Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan) shows us that it's not always which cacher retrieves a traveller that can make a difference, but rather which cacher doesn't retrieve! LaP(Maan) has been picked up by Quebecois cacher navy30000 who is planning to take the love-inspiring little TB back to Canada's east coast with him, which should add a considerable distance to it's distance travelled. However, only four days before being picked up, Hediya's entry was ignored by cacher spuchtfink, on holiday in the area from Bremen, Germany!

Don't look now, but there's a cow creeping up behind you...

Yes, despite Smart451's Smart Car 10 Knockout Racer TB being retrieved by enthusiast German newbie cacher Der-Steiger, lgxkls' Hazards Of Geocaching 1 - Karon's Knockout Racer Travel Bug has gained on the little two-tone car by the distance of 7.99 miles after cacher Helle22 dropped it into this recently-placed German cache. It was picked up the very next day by JohnPower & Mopxi.

Biggest move of this update goes to Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan) TB, which added 159.53 miles to it's total travelled after cachers Bull&Tink placed it into this fascinating cache, one of a series placed on an artificial spit built above a waste pipe discharging more than two miles into the recently named Salish Sea close to Vancouver International Airport.

This may be for naught though, as New Zealand cachers sww have revealed that they picked up current Knockout leader, Team Blid435's BraveHeart, last month and are planning to take it to Australia shortly...

A rare change in The Knockout rankings

...as wemnog's The Skylark Travel Bug moves ahead of mat smith's Hazards of Geocaching 2 (The Sheep) John's Knockout Racer TB. The Skylark was retrieved from the Cornish cache that it was moored in by local cachers Stompy&Stampy who then proceeded to take the little dinghy on a busy caching trip, managing to visit 141 caches in the next 5 days! Unfortunately for wemnog, almost all of this effort by Stompy&Stampy was wasted as Rule no.3 of The Great Travel Bug Knockout states:

3. Only the first move by a cacher will count.  Reason: This will not stop "dippers" from doing their thing, but it does mean that only their first dip counts.

The first cache that The Skylark visited whilst in the hands of S&S was this one in Warwickshire, which added 191.99 miles to it's distance travelled, sufficient to enable it to leapfrog mat smith's recently returned-to-action HoG2 Bug into 8th place overall in The Knockout.

I'm not going to link to all of the remaining 140 caches that The Skylark has been dipped into, you can find that here if you're the obsessive type, just mention that as well as Warwickshire it also visited caches in South Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Oxfordshire, Herefordshire and Wiltshire, including both this cache and this one which it has visited previously.

Current 2nd-placed Knockout entry, Hediya's  Love and Peace (Maan) TB was placed into this brand-new Canadian cache by MaliBooBoo, adding 25.9 miles to it's distance travelled. It was retrieved 3 days later by fellow British Columbians Bull&Tink.

Cooper troopers' the noble traveller TB has also been keeping on the move, Dutch cacher slottys placing it into this puzzle cache (the Dutch love their puzzle caches and their multis!) adding 83.97 miles to it's odometer. It didn't hang around however, as it was retrieved 2 days later by local cacher Radijs.

Not too far to the south in Belgium, current playground of oceanblue07970's Half Hearted Travel Bug, which cachers leffe&duvel placed into this multicache, 29.68 miles away from the cache that they retrieved it from. It was almost immediately picked up by local cacher Verborgen Boswitje.

Meanwhile, to the east, lgxkls' Hazards of Geocaching 1 - Karon's Knockout Racer TB was retrieved by German cacher Taubacher from the Italian cache that it had been left in. He has logged an intention to take HoG1 to Germany, but in the meantime stopped off in Austria (which the little bovine briefly visited in April) to dip it into this cache (adding 38.3 miles to it's total distance), this one (adding nothing) and this one (ditto!).

Finally, commiserations to castlegrice, whose George's Fun Bus 2 Bug has been placed into this Spanish cache, which would have added sufficient milage to save the little camper van from the scrapyard, but it came just 9 days too late!

STOP THE BLOG!! Just received word that German geocacher CryptoBLN retrieved current Knockout leader, Team Blid435's BraveHeart TB from the New Zealand cache that it has been languishing in for the last 2 months and dropped it into this more regularly visited one 1.35 miles along the coast. Well, at least he didn't take it back to Germany with him! (Team Blid435 - that's new!).

There I was slacking off...

...when I realised that it's Elimination Day tomorrow at The Great Travel Bug Knockout, so I'd best get the blog up-to-date!

The big question is: Is the sheep a sitting duck? Mat Smith's Hazards Of Geocaching 2 (The Sheep) Travel Bug went missing months ago, but it's distance travelled of 899.2 miles has kept it out of danger. However, castlegrice's George's Fun Bus 2 TB, which survived by the skin of it's teeth (the chrome of it's bumper?) last month, has been retrieved from the Scottish cache that it was resting in by Spanish cacher urriellu. If urriellu dips GFB2 into a cache back home before the deadline of noon tomorrow it will surely add sufficient milage to pass wemnog's The Skylark TB, which was picked up by cacher a1nnie, who then placed it into this Mega Event, adding 184.57 miles to it's distance travelled, but if it's quickly collected and placed by another cacher... Yes, it's all "ifs" at the moment. More worrying for wemnog must be that Travel Bugs sometimes disappear at busy events...

In other news, Canadian cachers Volkswag took Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan) TB to this cache, then this one, and finally this one where they passed it on to fellow Canadians MaliBooBoo.

Another entry to indulge in some pointless dipping is lgxkls' Hazards of Geocaching 1 - Karon's Knockout Racer, which was retrieved by Slovenian cacher lynx.attentus, who dipped the little bovine into this cache, adding 1.84 miles to it's distance travelled, and then proceeded to dip it into this cache, this one, this one and this one, and has retained possession of the Travel Bug.

Finally, oceanlue07970's Half Hearted TB has been picked up from the French cache that it was resting in by Belgian cacher SOSATO, who has logged an intention to take the shiny little bug back to Tintin's homeland with him.

Which entry has more than doubled it's distance travelled?

...the answer is oceanblue07970's Half Hearted Travel Bug, which was picked up from the French cache that it was resting in by French cacher ptittomtom, who then placed it into this cache in the Catalan speaking area of the French Pyreneés close to the border with Spain. This move added 453.57 miles to HH's distance travelled, more than doubling it's milage and moving the shiny little TB up 2 places in The Great Travel Bug Knockout's rankings.

This is bad news for castlegrice's George's Fun Bus 2 TB, which only just squeaked through last month's Elimination Day and now has to travel more than 300 miles to exceed the distance travelled by wemnog's The Skylark Travel Bug, which is made even more difficult by the tiny dinghy tendency to continually make little moves, which of course all add up; The Skylark's latest move added 27.35 miles to it's total distance when cacher Oofy placed it into this Essex cache.

Another entry making a move this week, albeit a much smaller one, was current 2nd-placed entry, Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan) TB which was retrieved by cachers Volkswag, who dipped it into this cache adding 0.56 of a mile to it's distance travelled. They subsequently dipped Love and Peace (Maan) into 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 more caches (the last one is a Virtual!), none of which add any official distance to LaP(Maan)'s record due to The Great Travel Bug Knockout's only-the-first-dip-by-a-cacher-counts rule.

Finally, two more entries have been retrieved recently, although neither has yet been placed into a cache; Smart451's Smart Car 10 Knockout Racer may finally be waving goodbye to Sweden after being picked up by Bavarian cacher SuRosis who is planning to take the little white car back to Germany with them, and cooper troopers' the noble traveller TB, which has been snaffled-up by Dutch cacher Schaduw1, who posted the following snap of the tiny TARDIS:

Is George's Bus still having fun?

It's five days until the next elimination from The Great Travel Bug Knockout, and castlegrice's George's Fun Bus 2 has to pack away the surfboards (in Scotland?!) and hit the road if it hopes to pass the probably missing Happy Hoppy TB owned by fuzziebear3.

No such worries for current 2nd-place entry Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan) Travel Bug, which, after it's Alaskan adventure, has been dropped into this cache in British Columbia, Canada ready to be retrieved and add to it's distance travelled.

Meanwhile, cooper troopers' the noble traveller has added 436.19 miles to it's distance travelled after being retrieved from the airport cache that was resting in by German cachers forestcats. They brought tnt back to the UK and dipped it into this London cache, before placing the silver TB into this popular one, from where it was quickly retrieved by Dutch cachers Arjan&denise, who have taken the travelling TARDIS back to their native (Nether)land.

Still in the UK, and indeed Greater London, wemnog's The Skylark Travel Bug was placed into this cache by cachers theleverets, adding 6.8 miles it's distance sailed. It was retreived 3 days later by local caching team The 5 Raybould Ramblers.

Finally for today, Slovenian cachers Kassiopeia82 picked up lgxkls' Hazards of Geocaching 1 TB from the cache that it residing in and dipped it into this cache, then this one, this one and this one. As per usual Knockout rules, only the first dip counts, so 3.06 miles have been added to HoG1's total distance.

Double Knockout blow for Jacaru's Ferrari?

Jacaru's Knockout Ferrari Travel Bug has suffered a possible double K.O. this week, as firstly it lost it's long-held second place in The Great Travel Bug Knockout to Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan) TB, and then was reported missing by the most recent finder of the cache that it was logged into...!

Speaking of The Knockout's new second-postition holder; Canadian cacher DisneyGirl took LaP(Maan) to this cache in the Alaskan city of Skagway (population 862 - not overly populated for a city!) but the cache was too full to leave it, so just dipped the love-spreading traveller, adding 880.07 miles to it's distance travelled, sufficient to nose ahead of Knockout Ferrari into second place overall. DisneyGirl subsequently dipped LaP(Maan) into this cache too (no milage added due to The Knockout's now infamous first-dip-by-each-cacher-only-to-count rule!) and has retained possession of the Bug.

Other entries on the move include cooper troopers' the noble traveller TB, which has materialised in this cache at the peculiar EuroAirport, which has official joint French and Swiss nationality, and has free access from Germany too. This drop has added 11.73 miles to tnt's race distance, and marks the little TARDIS' second visit to France.

Cooper troopers' friendly local rivals, Smart451 have seen their own Smart Car 10 Knockout Racer Travel Bug log some distance too, firstly cacher pensionist dropped it into this cache in Uppsala, Sweden, adding 119.71 miles to it's official Knockout distance travelled. It was quickly retrieved by visiting Czech cacher satanmar who the very same day placed the little car into this cache 0.44 of a mile away.

Finally, wemnog's The Skylark TB (which has covered 648.81 miles, despite not yet leaving England) has been picked up by cachers theleverets, whom I believe are based in Surrey.

Almost time for the 7th Day Of Elimination!

With only two days until the 7th entry is eliminated from The Great Travel Bug Knockout, the situation is looking bleak for G-X's Voodoo Whodo What You Don't Dare Do People (Racer Bug) TB, which has been missing since last month.

Not too many moves to report in the last couple of weeks; current 3rd place holder, Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan) Travel Bug was placed into this cache, adding 14.16 miles to it's distance travelled, and from where it was retrieved by Canadian cacher DisneyGirl. DG has indicated that she may move it to an Alaskan cache soon, hopefully breaking LaP(Maan) out of the circular holding pattern that it seems to be stuck in in British Columbia.

Smart451's Smart Car 10 Knockout Racer Travel Bug was placed into this popular Swedish cache, adding 8.61 miles, and was soon picked up by local cacher oskargeo.

After an extended stay of over three months in a Scottish cache, castlegrice's George's Fun Bus 2 TB has been collected by cacher cumbycritter.

Finally, wemnog's The Skylark Bug, which was in the hands of cacher hedgehogmad has been retrieved from this cache by cacher elliott150, with no evidence of how it got there (not the first time that this has happened to The Skylark!). Assuming that the little sailing boat was placed into this cache immediately from it's previous home (although it should be noted that LSL#09 is a premium member only cache and hedgehogmad is not a premium member of Geocaching.com), I have added 3.11 miles to TS's official Knockout distance covered.

A trio of retrievals

I've had some difficulty updating the blog recently, but everything seems okay now, so here goes;

Firstly, wemnog's The Skylark TB was picked up by cacher hedgehogmad.

Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan) Travel Bug was placed into this cache by cacher gottagonow, from where it was retrieved by fellow Canadian jrhere. As gottagonow had already dipped LaP(Maan) into a cache, no milage was added to Hediya's Bug's race distance in The Great Travel Bug Knockout.

Third of the trio to be collected was Smart451's Smart Car 10 Knockout Racer, which is now in the possession of Swedish cacher froderik.

I'm trying to ascertain if fuzziebear3's Happy Hoppy TB is still residing in the cache that it is logged into, as several cachers have visited the cache recently, but none have mentioned whether the little amphibian is present or missing.

Finally, isn't it typical, but my own The Exterminator! TB was eliminated from The Knockout six months ago, and has just been logged into a cache in Mallorca, more than 1000 miles away...

Catching up on an active Easter

Lots of moves in the second half of this week for entries in The Great Travel Bug Knockout; Current leader, Blid435's BraveHeart TB has been retrieved from the cache that it was resting in by New Zealand cacher Mel74.

Current 3rd place entry, Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan) trackable was placed into this cache by the Canadian cacher that was holding it, adding 21.62 miles to it's distance travelled. It was retrieved the very same day by fellow Canadian gottagonow, who subsequently dipped it into this nearby cache, adding 0.81 of a mile to it's Knockout milage. Gottagonow has retained possession of LaP(Maan), therefore any subsequent dips or placement will not add any official Knockout milage to it's record. LaP(Maan) keeps moving, but appears to be stuck in a sort of "Bermuda diamond" east of Vancouver at the moment. Will Hediya's entry eventually be swallowed up or break out?

Fourth placed entry, cooper troopers' the noble traveller TB, was retrieved from the German cache that it was residing in by cacher tapescript (whom I believe is Swiss, but does much of his caching in Germany). Two days later he dropped tnt into this interesting cache in Germany, sited at the epicentre of a Richter 4.5 earthquake which occured on May 5th 2009. This placement added 8.65 miles to tnt's distance travelled.

Cooper troopers' friendly local rivals, smart451, have had their Smart Car 10 Knockout Racer Travel Bug retrieved from the Swedish cache in which it had passed the last 16 days by Swedish newbies SjöqvistRockers.

16 days is nothing compared to the 73 days that oceanblue07970's Half Hearted Travel Bug spent in a cache in France before being retrieved by experienced French cacher christian35, who the very same day dipped it into this nearby cache, adding 1.14 miles to ½H's distance travelled. Christian35 has since dipped the shiny little trackable into no less than thirteen more caches, none of which add official Knockout milage, and has retained possession.

Finally, as more than one cacher has noted the disappearance of G-X's Voodoo Whodo What You Don't Dare Do People (Racer Bug) TB, I've marked it as whereabouts unknown, hopefully only temporarily!

Still no sign of The Wild Man of the Woods...

It's the final countdown for Grizzly Pair's Quatchi - Grizzly's Knockout Racer! Will the elusive Travel Bug be found in time to add sufficient milage to it's distance to exceed Billy Bear Racer's distance? For that matter, will Billy Bear Racer turn up in a cache or a cacher's hands? All will be revealed by noon tomorrow...

In other news from The Great Travel Bug Knockout, 4 of the current top 6 have either been dropped off or picked up:

Racer leader, Blid435's BraveHeart TB, has been retrieved from the cache that it was resting in by newbie cachers FlipDags. This is the first trackable that FlipDags have ever picked up. Will they know what to do with it?

Third placed TB, Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan), has been placed into this event cache, to be held tomorrow, adding 5.23 miles to it's distance travelled.

Fourth placed entry cooper troopers' the noble traveller, has also been moved a short distance, 1.21 miles, and I'm sure that any distance added will please cooper troopers, but will they be happy that their Travel Bug has moved from a cache that is visited almost every day to one that is visited almost every week!?

Finally, current sixth placed Bug, smart451's Smart Car 10 Knockout Racer was retrieved from the event cache that it was placed into by experienced Swedish cacher omaster.

It's countdown time again at The Great Travel Bug Knockout, and Grizzly Pair's Quatchi Knockout Racer TB appears to be a sitting duck, having disappeared into a thief's personal menagerie months ago. Of course, one can never quite tell when or where a Bigfoot will appear!

In other Knockout news, Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan) Travel Bug is on the move again, having been picked up by Canadian cachers laphamclan, whilst Swedish cachers Pettssons have finally placed Smart451's Smart Car 10 Knockout Racer into a cache, this one, for literally, a well-deserved cup of coffee, well-deserved because prior to stopping at this event cache, SC10KR visited no less than seventeen caches in and around the area of Södertälje, click the links to see which ones!

Love and Peace (Maan) passes the 5000 mile mark

Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan) Travel Bug has been retrieved from the Canadian cache that it was resting in by Canadian cachers Burwash Family, who quickly placed LaP(Maan) into this cache, part of an Winnie-the-Pooh themed series, adding 13.78 miles to it's distance travelled, sufficient to pass the 5000 mile mark. Oh, and although Love and Peace is still going around in circles, it's now going clockwise, rather than anticlockwise, which may or may not help it to break out of British Columbia!

A second entry in The Great Travel Bug Knockout to be retrieved (albeit not yet placed) is cooper troopers' the noble traveller, which has been picked up by experienced German cacher wodan74.

3rd, 4th and 5th place entries respond to Knockout Ferrari's move

While Blid435's BraveHeart TB kicks it's heels in New Zealand, not only has Jacaru's Knockout Ferrari gained 78.76 miles, but now Hediya's Love and Peace (Maan) has caught up by 20.28 miles after being placed into this intriguing cache outside a drive-in cinema. Just one thought, if everyone has to tune their car radios into the soundtrack, does everyone end up with a flat battery at the end of the film?

Next up is cooper troopers' the noble traveller TB, which has gained a whopping 525.58 miles by being placed into this cache in the south-western corner of Germany, close to borders with both France and Switzerland. The cache is dedicated to poet Johann Peter Hebel.

Finally, current fifth-placed Travel Bug in The Great Travel Bug Knockout, lgxkls' Hazards of Geocaching 1 - Karon's Knockout Racer has been dipped into this microcache, part of a series that spells out the word Újpest, the district of Budapest, Hungary that the cache is hidden in. This has added 176.05 miles to HoG1's distance travelled.
